1974 Volkswagen Kombi
$20,000
Video
Description
Meet ‘Belle’! This glorious 1974 VW Kombi has served our iconic environmental charity Keep New Zealand Beautiful as a promo vehicle to help us reach communities across Aotearoa. Sadly, with a lack of ongoing funding from central government, we’re needing to urgently find a new home for Belle.
Named after the lead character in ‘Beauty and the Beast’, Belle is equipped with an 1800cc motor, roof racks, tow bar, a canopy and heaps of extras.
First registered in NZ in 1980, she was an import from South Africa. We acquired her in 2017 from her previous diligent owner in Queenstown who had put a lot of effort into restoring Belle to tip-top condition. We had big plans for Belle – we were going to get her professionally electrified, because what better way to deliver environmental education across Aotearoa than a retro e-powered Kombi! But the soaring costs of turning Belle into an EV plus the pandemic put these plans on hold. Now we need to sell her to help us safeguard free environmental education for the next generation of Tidy Kiwis.
Belle also comes with:
- 50x Valvemaster syringes
- Snowchains, tools, fuel cans, a tow rope, a cover and spare parts
- Plush sheepskin seat covers
With 50 years and 245,650km on the clock, Belle has her quirks as all Kombis do – she’s doesn’t like cold mornings, her fuel gauge isn’t accurate, and you need to treat her gently. Otherwise she’s in good condition and doesn’t need much to be roadworthy; she would benefit from finding a home with a VW enthusiast.
Belle does require work; the V-Dub Shoppe Ngaruawahia has provided an estimate on repairs including brakes, tie rods, rear shocks, CV boots and wheel bearings which need to be completed to bring her up to WoF standard. But if you're handy this is an easy project – the bones are sound and her motor strong. Contact Mitch on 0800 030 930 to view.
Whether you’re keen to start a unique coffee business, keen to travel NZ in a classic, or just want a solid investment as Kombis of this calibre become even rarer, put in your bid!
Questions & Answers
Keep New Zealand Beautiful have been around since 1967 and are one of NZ’s longest standing environmental charities. With over 50 years of service to the community, our iconic campaigns ‘Be a Tidy Kiwi’ and ‘Do the Right Thing’ have become an intrinsic part of New Zealand’s identity. However, the free environmental education that we provide for schools in marginalised communities is at risk. Despite being mandated by the Litter Act 1979, we receive no ongoing funding from central government. Seller comment Wednesday, 1 May 2024 We're selling our beloved Kombi 'Belle' as part of our appeal to raise over $150,000 to provide our quality, free environmental education programmes beyond Term 2, 2024. If you're interested in helping safeguard free environmental education, please consider donating here >> https://bit.ly/SafeguardFreeEnvironmentalEducation . Thank you, and good luck on the auction! Seller comment Wednesday, 1 May 2024 Hi, Wondering if the registration is alive or will this need re vin? Cheers d*****5 (307 • 06:49 pm, Wed, 1 May )Hi Dean, registration is on hold -- it's still live, the Kombi won't need a re-VIN. Cheers knzbtidykiwi (0 • Wednesday, 1 May 2024 )Keep New Zealand Beautiful used to be a campaign on litter, now it’s a “environmental education program” for “Aotearoa” - is it about litter or is it about cows and cars are bad? Cheers b*********1 (209 • 07:23 pm, Wed, 1 May )Hi Dave, if litter collection is the ambulance at the bottom of a cliff, environmental education is the fence at the top. To really make a difference, we need to educate children early to help them become the Tidy Kiwis of the future. I assume you remember our 'Do the Right Thing' and 'Tidy Kiwi' campaigns from your youth? We still have thousands of volunteers nationwide working hard on keeping the communities beautiful as well. Our website knzb.org.nz has details on all our programmes. Cheers knzbtidykiwi (0 • Wednesday, 1 May 2024 )Where’s Aotearoa? j******3 (113 • 09:30 pm, Wed, 1 May )Hi Pierre, do you have questions about this Kombi, or other questions that can't be answered by Google? knzbtidykiwi (0 • Wednesday, 1 May 2024 )Hi there, is she drivable at the moment? Where can I view? What’s the total from the VDUB quote? j******3 (113 • 12:43 pm, Thu, 2 May )Hi, the Kombi starts easily and runs well for a 50 year old vehicle, however it needs brake work, wheel bearings and a few other items completed to be roadworthy. Check out photos 19 and 20 for details and estimates of the work required to get it to WoF standard. If you're mechanically inclined, that estimated price would likely drop dramatically. Mitch at V-Dub Shoppe is the best to talk to about the finer points or about organising a viewing at their Ngāruawāhia workshop, 0800 030 930. Cheers knzbtidykiwi (0 • Thursday, 2 May 2024 )As a regular litter collecter and troubleshooter since 1989 i disagree much that litter collection is the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff and education is the key. i have always collected litter as it is the classic early intervention "FIXING THE BROKEN WINDOWS" it us also powerful education for children to see their litter get stamped out by a volunteer s*******n (829 • 09:50 pm, Thu, 2 May )We meant no disrespect -- thank you for your hard work over the years. Our original mandate in the 1960s was solely litter abatement, however since then NZ’s economy & population has exploded and so has the scale of NZ's waste problem. Free environmental education for our youngest tamariki weaves together with the hard mahi by volunteers in our communities, and each has a huge part to play in tackling NZ's litter problem. Here's hoping the sale of the Kombi helps us continue this vital work. knzbtidykiwi (0 • Thursday, 2 May 2024 )If you could just stick to the original pick up your litter message that would be fine but most of these environmental groups have been taken over by political ideologue’s and that’s why you should not be state funded. Here’s hoping Marsden point oil refinery is reinstated. b*********1 (209 • 11:24 am, Fri, 3 May )Thanks for your opinion, good luck when bidding on the Kombi. knzbtidykiwi (0 • Friday, 3 May 2024 )The engine says 1800cc is that VW ?? w******z (429 • 11:12 am, Sun, 5 May )Hi, best to call Mitch at the V-Dub Shoppe on 0800 030 930 for detail on the engine. Cheers knzbtidykiwi (0 • Sunday, 5 May 2024 )Hi everyone, the reserve price is set at a very modest price, the Kombi will sell at $29,990. Make a bid now, or contact us via this listing to discuss. All the best! Seller comment Monday, 6 May 2024 I know they do some good work keeping rubbish under control and picking it up and keeping rivers, parks and the beaches clean .But me thinks they are running out of funding due to them becoming a politically aligned socialist lobby group .Gone a bit woke I'm afraid. Building an electric van would never be good use of funds ,good it didn't happen really . t*******y (322 • 06:57 pm, Wed, 8 May )Hmm.. market value and your reserve probably quite far out h******1 (963 • 10:35 am, Thu, 9 May )
